Make Your Own Spelling Dictionary!

This ongoing activity and learning tool will improve your child’s writing, reading, spelling and alphabetizing skills.  Label the tops of 26 pieces of lined paper with each letter of the alphabet.  Next, add a cover page, and staple the pages together to make a book.  Explain to your child that this dictionary can be a reference tool to use when he is reading or writing!  Each time your child asks for your help in spelling a word, ask him to get this dictionary and find the correct letter page to correspond with the beginning sound.  Then, you or your child can write the new word into the dictionary.  Over time, the pages will overflow with words that your child reads and writes on a daily basis.  And by using this tool, your child will grow into a more confident and capable speller.
